I heard recently of a young man’s pulses being read as Kapha. He asked his friend for a description and upon hearing it exclaimed “Oh no, does that mean I am a Hufflepuff? I want to be a Gryffindor!”
Indeed, what is a Gryffindor? How does the momentous imagination of JK Rowling align with the classifications of one’s Nature in Ayurveda? Ayurvedic Astrology leads the way. I propose that yes, perhaps Kapha does line up smudgily with the Hufflepuffs, and Vaata lines up roughly and airily with the Ravenclaws. JK Rowling does saythat the Hufflepuffs represent the Earth element and Ravenclaws the Air element. “You might belong in Hufflepuff, Where they are just and loyal, Those patient Hufflepuffs are true, And unafraid of toil“--The Sorting Hat[src] “Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw, If you’ve a ready mind, Where those of wit and learning, Will always find their kind.“--The Sorting Hat[src] The Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs are not integral to the series however. Earth is relatively impervious to all and Air rises above all. What then of the all-important battle between the Gryffindors (Fire) and Slytherins (Water)? I would submit that Gryffindors are Solar Pitta, and Syltherins are Mars Pitta. Pitta is composed of fire and water, it is said, and fire and water have an uneasy interwoven relationship that is essential for transformation. They can extinguish each other, but when they are together in proper relationship, great power can be born. Astrologically there are two very distinct kinds of Pitta, Solar and Martial. Those people with strong and/or active Suns in their charts represent the Gryffindor and those with strong and/or active Mars represent the Slytherin. The Sun rules the fiery Leo in us, as brave and true and Dharmic a place as exists in our charts. Mars rules Aries and watery Scorpio. The watery Martial Scorpio in us is obviously the province of Slytherin energy. Where do the two energies engage? Aries is where the Sun is exalted, and yet it is owned by Mars. Aries is where the two types of Pitta intersect. Aries in our chart is our very own great Bhagavad Gita style battle, and that is what we have seen expressed so well in the book series where we come to understand that the Gryffindors and Slytherins are not completely dissimilar. Aries is the grand Dharmic war between relatives and relations. It is our Dharmic war. After all, “You might belong in Gryffindor, Where dwell the brave at heart, Their daring, nerve and chivalry Set Gryffindors apart“--The Sorting Hat[src] “Or perhaps in Slytherin, You’ll make your real friends, Those cunning folk use any means, To achieve their ends.“--The Sorting Hat[src]
