Ayurvedic Daily Organ Activation Cycle as Found in the Jyotisha Chart

Below is the classical ancient empty chart of Jyotisha. Its diamonds and squares rightly can be said to describe all of space-time.
Picture
Here it is with the houses labeled in order according to the schema of kaala purusha, the grand personage of time.
Picture
The sectors are numbered one through twelve and can represent anything including the daily travel of the Sun (which is also the soul, Atman). The four notable sandhis of that solar soular travel can be depicted in the following way according to the Sun's placement at those times.
Picture
The unlabeled sectors here can just be considered the in-between times between those sandhis.

Since there are 24 hours in the day and 12 sectors, in this schema each sector can be said to represent 2 hours.

In Ayurveda, the doshas occur in the following daily time frames:
  • vata is from 2 to 6 am and pm,
  • pitta is from 10 to 2 am and pm,
  • kapha  is from 6 to 10 am and pm,
With sunrise theoretically or poetically at 6 am, the Sun theoretically overhead at noon, sunset at 6 pm, and Sun underfoot at midnight, we can build pictorially on the empty Jyotisha chart to represent this set of distinctions.

More specifically, the organs of the body follow a daily rhythm of activation as well (image below is from svasthaayurveda.com).

Hence, they can be mapped onto this same empty chart with each juncture between houses representing an organ activation as defined classically in Ayurveda.

Some really beautiful symmetries emerge. For example, lung activation is reflected about the vertical midline and the heart is reflected about the horizontal midline. Even when it seems there is a difference, e.g. between liver & gallbladder and spleen, they are really depicting the differences between the right and left parts of the actual body in that region.

Finally, and making the following observation is the motivation of the whole of this post, each organ is activated six houses away from the classical Jyotisha representation of that organ as counted like how the Sun moves in the chart, viz. clockwise.

For example,
  • the heart in Jyotisha is the upper fourth house. In the Ayurvedic cycle above it is in the upper tenth house. [4 + 6 =10]
  • the liver and gallbladder in Jyotisha is connected to a sense of will and so are associated with the third house. In the Ayurvedic cycle above it is in the ninth house. [3 +6 =9]
  • the stomach in Jyotisha is the fifth house. In the Ayurvedic cycle above it is in the eleventh  house. [5+ 6 =11]

The symmetric entries to these are just the equivalents mirrored on the other side of the body. *

This observation may ultimately be why the sixth house is associated with health!
Let me know what you think and if you have any questions.

* The one exception to this schema is that the lungs (represented in Jyotisha as a fourth house indication) move only four houses away in the Ayurvedic representation. I think this may be for two reasons from within the body intelligence:
  • 4+ 6 =10 is already taken by the heart representation
  • 4 + 4 is a beautiful articulation of bhavat bhavam, an essential principle of Jyotisha that holds that you can repeat the house movement to find the indication rarefied.
